About Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene was one of Jesus's most devoted followers and the first witness to the Resurrection. The Gospels identify her as a woman from whom Jesus cast out seven demons, transforming her into a faithful disciple who supported His ministry and remained at the Cross when most disciples fled.

On Easter morning, Mary came to the tomb and found it empty. Weeping, she encountered the risen Christ, who called her by name: "Mary!" She recognized Him and responded "Rabboni!" (Teacher). Jesus sent her to announce the Resurrection to the apostles, making her "apostle to the apostles."

Western tradition (following Pope Gregory the Great) identified Mary Magdalene with the penitent sinner who anointed Jesus and with Mary of Bethany, though these may be distinct women. Eastern tradition maintains they are separate. Regardless, Mary Magdalene's devotion, presence at the crucifixion, and role as first resurrection witness are undisputed.

Tradition says Mary lived in Ephesus with John and the Virgin Mary, or traveled to France evangelizing. She died peacefully, a model of conversion, devotion, and apostolic witness.
