About Monica of Hippo

Monica was the mother of Augustine of Hippo, renowned for her patience, tears, and persistent prayer for her son's conversion. Born to Christian parents in North Africa, Monica married Patricius, a pagan with a violent temper. Despite his abuse and infidelity, Monica's gentle patience eventually led to his conversion and baptism shortly before his death.

Monica's greatest trial was her son Augustine, who abandoned Christianity for Manichaeism, lived with a concubine, and pursued worldly success. Monica prayed and wept for him for seventeen years. When Augustine planned to sail to Rome, Monica followed him, but he secretly departed while she prayed in a chapel.

Undeterred, Monica followed him to Milan, where Bishop Ambrose encouraged her: "The son of such tears cannot perish." Through Ambrose's preaching and Monica's prayers, Augustine converted in 386. Monica witnessed his baptism at Easter 387.

Shortly after, while waiting at Ostia to return to Africa, Monica and Augustine shared a profound mystical vision described in his Confessions. Monica then told Augustine her earthly desires were fulfilled, having seen him Christian and God's servant. She fell ill and died nine days later at age 56.

Monica's patience, perseverance in prayer, and ultimate joy in her son's conversion make her patron of mothers praying for wayward children.
