About Anastasia of Sirmium

Anastasia was a Roman noblewoman who ministered to Christians imprisoned during Diocletian's persecution. Born to Christian mother and pagan father, Anastasia married a pagan nobleman but secretly supported imprisoned Christians, bringing them food, medicine, and comfort. Her husband discovered her activities and confined her, but after his death, she continued her ministry openly. Traveling to Sirmium (modern Serbia), she was arrested during the persecution. Refusing to sacrifice to pagan gods, Anastasia was martyred, reportedly burned to death on December 25, 304. Her cult spread widely; she is commemorated in the Roman Canon and has a station church in Rome (Sant'Anastasia). The tradition of a second Mass on Christmas Day originally commemorated Anastasia. Her fearless ministry to prisoners and martyrs exemplifies Christian charity under persecution.
