About Athanasius the Confessor

Athanasius I served twice as Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople (1289-1293, 1303-1309). Known for his rigorous reforms and ascetic lifestyle, Athanasius worked to reform clergy, combat corruption, and aid the poor. His strict discipline and confrontation with powerful interests made him controversial. He resigned twice due to opposition but returned when recalled. Athanasius established charitable institutions, defended orthodox theology, and lived simply despite his high office. After his second resignation, he retired to a monastery where he died in 1323. He was glorified as a saint in the Orthodox Church for his pastoral zeal, defense of the faith, and personal holiness.
