About Eusebius of Vercelli

Eusebius was Bishop of Vercelli in northern Italy and a staunch defender of Nicene orthodoxy against Arianism. Born in Sardinia, Eusebius became bishop around 345. He combined episcopal duties with monastic life, establishing a community of clergy living under a rule—pioneering a monastic-clerical lifestyle. When Emperor Constantius II tried to force bishops to condemn Athanasius at the Council of Milan (355), Eusebius refused and was exiled to the East for his defense of orthodoxy. He endured harsh treatment during exile but remained firm. After Constantius's death, Eusebius returned to Vercelli in 363 and worked to restore Nicene faith in northern Italy. He may have produced an early Latin translation of the Gospels. Eusebius died in 371, revered for his courage in defending true faith despite imperial pressure and personal suffering.
