Linus

About Linus

Linus was the second Bishop of Rome (Pope), succeeding Peter around 67 AD and serving until about 76 AD. Irenaeus and other early sources confirm Linus as Peter's immediate successor, possibly the same Linus mentioned by Paul in 2 Timothy 4:21. Little is definitively known of his pontificate, which occurred during Nero's persecution and its aftermath. Tradition credits Linus with ordaining bishops and organizing the early Roman church. He reportedly decreed that women should cover their heads in church. Linus was likely martyred, though details are uncertain. He was buried near Peter on Vatican Hill. As the first in the long line of popes following Peter, Linus represents apostolic succession and the continuity of Peter's ministry in Rome.
