Victor I was Pope from 189-199 AD, the first pope from Africa and possibly the first Latin-speaking pope (earlier popes spoke Greek). Victor is known for his forceful leadership in the Quartodeciman controversy—the dispute over Easter's date. Eastern churches celebrated Easter on Passover (14th of Nisan, hence "Quartodeciman"), while Rome celebrated on the following Sunday. Victor attempted to excommunicate Eastern churches who wouldn't conform to Roman practice. Irenaeus of Lyon wrote to Victor urging tolerance on this non-essential matter, and Victor moderated his position. Though criticized for his harshness, Victor's action demonstrated early papal authority. He also opposed various heresies and supported Christian learning. Tradition holds Victor was martyred, though evidence is uncertain. His African origin and assertive leadership represent Christianity's spread beyond the Mediterranean heartland.
