About Agnes of Montepulciano

Agnes was a Dominican nun and mystic from Montepulciano, Italy. At age nine, she joined a convent; by 15, she was appointed abbess—extraordinary for her youth but recognized for her holiness and wisdom. Agnes founded a new monastery in her hometown and served as abbess there. She lived a life of severe penance, deep prayer, and mystical experiences, including visions of the Virgin Mary and angels. Agnes performed miracles: multiplying bread, healing the sick, and causing heavenly phenomena. Despite her austerities, she governed wisely and attracted many to religious life. She died at 49, worn out by penances. Her body remained incorrupt. Catherine of Siena later visited her tomb and had a vision of Agnes, deepening Catherine's own vocation. Agnes exemplifies youthful sanctity and contemplative leadership.
