About Edmund the Martyr

Edmund was King of East Anglia who became a martyr defending his kingdom against Viking invaders. After the Vikings defeated his army in 869, Edmund was captured. The Vikings demanded he renounce Christianity and share power. Edmund refused, declaring he would never deny Christ or betray his people to pagans. He was tied to a tree, shot with arrows until "he looked like a hedgehog," and finally beheaded. His cult spread rapidly, and the town of Bury St Edmunds grew around his shrine. Edmund exemplifies the Christian warrior-king who chose death over apostasy.
