Gianna Beretta Molla was an Italian pediatrician and mother who, when pregnant with her fourth child, developed complications requiring treatment that would kill the baby. She refused, choosing to risk her life rather than harm her child. She successfully gave birth but died a week later from complications. Her sacrifice for her child made her a model for pro-life advocacy. Canonized 2004.
