About Abraham

Abraham, originally named Abram, is revered as the father of faith in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Born in Ur of the Chaldeans in ancient Mesopotamia, Abraham lived in a polytheistic culture where his own father Terah made idols. According to Jewish tradition, even as a young man, Abraham recognized the existence of one true God and rejected idolatry.

When Abraham was seventy-five years old, God called him to leave his country, his people, and his father's household and go to a land that God would show him. In an extraordinary act of faith, Abraham obeyed, taking his wife Sarah (originally Sarai), his nephew Lot, and all their possessions, and set out for the land of Canaan. God made a covenant with Abraham, promising to make him into a great nation, to bless him, to make his name great, and to make him a blessing to all peoples on earth.

Despite this promise, Abraham and Sarah remained childless for many years. When Abraham was eighty-six, Sarah gave her Egyptian maidservant Hagar to Abraham, and Hagar bore Ishmael. However, God later reaffirmed His covenant, changing Abram's name to Abraham (father of many nations) and Sarai's name to Sarah (princess), and promising that Sarah would bear a son. When Abraham was one hundred years old and Sarah was ninety, Isaac was born, fulfilling God's promise.

The greatest test of Abraham's faith came when God commanded him to sacrifice Isaac on Mount Moriah. Abraham, though it must have torn his heart, prepared to obey, trusting that God could even raise the dead. As Abraham raised the knife, an angel stopped him, and God provided a ram for the sacrifice instead. This demonstrated Abraham's complete trust in God and prefigured the future sacrifice of Christ.

Abraham purchased the cave of Machpelah as a burial place for Sarah and was later buried there himself. He is remembered for his hospitality, his intercession for Sodom, and above all, his unwavering faith in God's promises, becoming the spiritual father of all believers.
