Hosea was an Old Testament prophet whose book uses his marriage to an unfaithful wife as a metaphor for God's relationship with unfaithful Israel. Despite Israel's idolatry, God promises restoration through love. Hosea's message emphasized God's steadfast love and mercy. His prophecy "I desire mercy, not sacrifice" was quoted by Jesus. Venerated as a major prophet in Christian tradition.
