About Charles Lwanga

Charles Lwanga was leader of the Uganda Martyrs—22 Catholic converts (and 23 Anglican) killed by King Mwanga II between 1885-1887. Charles protected young pages from the king's sexual advances and instructed them in Christianity. When the king ordered Christians killed, Charles and his companions chose death over apostasy or immorality. They were burned alive at Namugongo on June 3, 1886. Their courage strengthened Christianity in Africa. Canonized 1964 with 21 companions—the first black African martyrs canonized.
