Edith Stein

About Edith Stein

Edith Stein was a German Jewish philosopher who converted to Catholicism and became a Carmelite nun, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. A brilliant student of phenomenology, she wrote on empathy, women, and faith-reason relationship. When Nazis occupied Netherlands, she was arrested for being Jewish and sent to Auschwitz, where she was killed in the gas chamber in 1942. Canonized 1998, declared co-patroness of Europe 1999.
