Oscar Romero was Archbishop of San Salvador who defended the poor and denounced violence during El Salvador's civil war. Initially conservative, he became an advocate for justice after witnessing atrocities against the poor. His homilies courageously named perpetrators of violence. He was assassinated while celebrating Mass on March 24, 1980, by a death squad, becoming a martyr for justice and peace. Canonized 2018.
