About Tatian the Syrian

Tatian was a student of Justin Martyr who became an important but controversial Christian writer. Born in Assyria, he studied Greek philosophy before converting to Christianity. His "Oration to the Greeks" sharply criticized Greek culture and philosophy, contrasting it unfavorably with Christianity. More importantly, Tatian created the "Diatessaron"—a harmonized Gospel account weaving Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John into a single narrative. This became the standard Gospel text in Syria for centuries. Later in life, Tatian embraced Encratite heresy (extreme asceticism rejecting marriage and wine). Despite his later heterodoxy, his Diatessaron profoundly influenced Syriac Christianity.
