Symmachus

About Symmachus

Symmachus was Pope from 498-514, elected in a disputed election that created a schism when rival Lawrence was also elected. The Ostrogothic King Theodoric initially supported Lawrence but later recognized Symmachus. Despite continued opposition and false accusations, Symmachus defended papal authority and independence. He strengthened liturgy, built churches, cared for the poor, and supported refugees from Arian persecution in Africa. He successfully maintained Catholic orthodoxy against Arianism dominant among Germanic rulers. His turbulent pontificate established important precedents for papal independence from secular powers.
