Aelred was a Cistercian abbot and spiritual writer known as the "Bernard of the North." Born in northern England, he served at the Scottish court before entering Rievaulx Abbey. As abbot, he led with compassion, expanding the community to 300 monks. His writings on friendship ("Spiritual Friendship") and contemplative life deeply influenced Cistercian spirituality. He emphasized love, compassion, and Christ's humanity, combining monastic rigor with pastoral gentleness.
