Pachomius

About Pachomius

Pachomius was an Egyptian soldier who converted to Christianity and founded cenobitic (communal) monasticism. Unlike hermit monks, Pachomius's monks lived in community under a written rule. He established the first Christian monastery at Tabennisi around 320 AD, which grew to thousands of monks in multiple monasteries. His rule balanced prayer, work, and community life. Pachomius' organizational genius created a sustainable model that influenced Basil and Benedict. He died caring for plague-stricken monks in 348.
