About Angela of Foligno

Angela of Foligno was a Franciscan tertiary and mystic whose spiritual autobiography records intense mystical experiences. A wealthy wife and mother who lived worldly life, Angela converted dramatically around age 37. After her husband and children died, she embraced radical poverty and received extraordinary visions of Christ's Passion and divine love. Her "Memorial" and "Instructions," dictated to her confessor, describe mystical union with God in vivid, sometimes shocking language. She combined contemplation with service to lepers and the poor.
