About Jean de Lalande

Jean de Lalande was a French layman and donnés (lay assistant) to Jesuit missionaries in New France. He accompanied Isaac Jogues on his fatal return to Mohawk territory. When Jogues was killed, Jean could have escaped but chose to remain. The next day, he was tomahawked to death. Though not a priest or religious, his martyrdom alongside the Jesuit missionaries made him one of the North American Martyrs, canonized in 1930.
