About Hilary of Poitiers

Hilary of Poitiers was a 4th-century bishop and Doctor of the Church, called the "Athanasius of the West" for defending Nicene orthodoxy against Arianism. Born to pagan nobility, Hilary converted as an adult after philosophical search led him to Christianity. As Bishop of Poitiers, he opposed Arian Emperor Constantius II and was exiled to Phrygia. During exile, Hilary wrote his great work "On the Trinity," systematically defending Christ's divinity using Scripture and reason. After returning, he continued fighting Arianism. Hilary's theological precision and pastoral courage earned him recognition as a Doctor of the Church (1851).
