About Madeleine Sophie Barat

Madeleine Sophie Barat founded the Society of the Sacred Heart, dedicated to educating girls. Born in France in 1779, Sophie was educated by her brother, a priest. In 1800, she co-founded the Society of the Sacred Heart with the first school opening in 1801. Sophie emphasized education of both rich and poor girls (separate schools), combining academic excellence with religious formation. Her order grew to 89 schools in 12 countries during her lifetime. Sophie served as Superior General for 63 years, governing with wisdom and charity. Canonized 1925.
