About Joel

Joel was an Old Testament prophet whose book describes a devastating locust plague as a call to repentance and a foreshadowing of the Day of the Lord. Joel's prophecy of God pouring out His Spirit "on all flesh" (Joel 2:28-29) was quoted by Peter at Pentecost as fulfilled in the coming of the Holy Spirit. Joel emphasizes genuine repentance—"rend your hearts and not your garments"—and God's mercy to those who turn to Him. His apocalyptic imagery influenced later biblical and Christian literature. He is venerated as one of the twelve minor prophets.
