Malachi was the last of the Old Testament prophets, writing around 450 BC after the exile. His name means "my messenger." Malachi confronted post-exilic Judah's spiritual apathy, corrupt priesthood, improper worship, and divorce. He prophesied that God would send "my messenger" to prepare the way (interpreted as John the Baptist) and promised that God would send Elijah before the great Day of the Lord. Malachi's emphasis on tithing, proper worship, and the coming messenger bridged the Old and New Testaments. After Malachi, no canonical prophet arose until John the Baptist, making him the final voice of the prophetic era.
