About Nerses the Great

Nerses I the Great was Catholicos (Patriarch) of the Armenian Apostolic Church from 353-373 AD. A descendant of Gregory the Illuminator (who converted Armenia), Nerses was educated in Caesarea and served at the Armenian court before becoming Catholicos. He worked tirelessly for Church reform, social justice, and care for the poor and sick. Nerses established hospitals, orphanages, and hospices—pioneering organized Christian charitable institutions. He confronted King Arshak for murdering his wife and later King Pap for corruption, showing prophetic courage. Nerses was allegedly poisoned by King Pap in 373. He is revered as one of Armenia's greatest spiritual leaders, combining pastoral care, social reform, and courageous witness. The Armenian Church commemorates him as a saint and father of Armenian Christianity.
