Pope Leo II

About Pope Leo II
Leo II was Pope from 682-683, known for his learning and musical abilities. A Sicilian by birth, Leo was renowned for his knowledge of Scripture and eloquence in both Greek and Latin. His short pontificate is most notable for confirming the decrees of the Third Council of Constantinople (680-681), which condemned Monothelitism and affirmed that Christ has two wills—divine and human. Leo also confirmed the condemnation of Pope Honorius I for failing to clearly oppose Monothelitism, showing his commitment to doctrinal purity over institutional loyalty. Leo promoted sacred music and church building in Rome. He was known for his charity to the poor and his pastoral care. Though his reign was brief (less than one year), his learning, orthodoxy, and willingness to condemn even a predecessor for doctrinal weakness earned him recognition as a saint.
