About Chromatius of Aquileia

Chromatius was Bishop of Aquileia and a biblical scholar of the early Church. He became bishop around 388 and governed wisely for nearly 20 years. Chromatius supported Jerome's biblical translation work and encouraged Rufinus. He wrote extensive biblical commentaries, particularly on Matthew's Gospel, emphasizing spiritual interpretation and moral application. Chromatius also wrote treatises defending orthodoxy and sermons notable for their clarity and pastoral wisdom. He mediated disputes between Jerome and Rufinus when their friendship broke over theological differences. John Chrysostom appealed to Chromatius for support during his exile. Chromatius was present at the Council of Aquileia (381) which condemned Arianism. Though less famous than contemporary Church Fathers, Chromatius was highly respected for learning, charity, and pastoral wisdom. His writings preserve important early Christian exegesis.
