About Epiphanius of Salamis

Epiphanius was Bishop of Salamis (Cyprus) and a zealous defender of orthodoxy against heresies. Born in Palestine, he founded a monastery before becoming bishop around 367. Epiphanius was a learned scholar who spoke Hebrew, Syriac, Egyptian, Greek, and Latin. His major work "Panarion" (Medicine Chest) catalogs and refutes 80 heresies, providing valuable historical information about early Christian movements, though sometimes based on unreliable sources. However, Epiphanius' anti-heretical zeal sometimes led to controversy—he opposed Origen's allegorical methods and destroyed images in churches, and clashed with John Chrysostom over the Origenist controversy. Despite these disputes, his learning, monastic piety, and tireless defense of Nicene orthodoxy earned him recognition as a Church Father. He died at sea in 403 while returning from Constantinople.
