About Firmilian of Caesarea

Firmilian was Bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia and an important 3rd-century Church Father. A student of Origen in Palestine, Firmilian became a respected theologian and church leader. He participated in several councils addressing heresies and the baptism controversy. Firmilian sided with Cyprian of Carthage in the dispute with Pope Stephen I over rebaptism of heretics—whether those baptized by heretics needed rebaptism when joining the orthodox Church. His letter to Cyprian, preserved in Cyprian's correspondence, provides important historical evidence of early Church debates and shows that papal authority was not universally accepted in its later form. Firmilian worked against the heretic Paul of Samosata who denied Christ's divinity. He died while traveling to a council to condemn Paul. Venerated especially in the Eastern Church as a defender of orthodoxy and witness to early Christian theology.
