Gregory Thaumaturgus ("Wonder-Worker") was Bishop of Neocaesarea, famed for converting his entire diocese through miracles and preaching. Born to a pagan family, Gregory studied under Origen at Caesarea and converted to Christianity. As bishop of his native city (where only 17 Christians existed when he began), he performed numerous miracles—moving a mountain that blocked church construction, drying up a lake causing disputes between brothers, appearing in two places simultaneously, and controlling a river's flooding. By his death, only 17 pagans remained in Neocaesarea—he had essentially converted an entire city. Gregory's Trinitarian theology, expressed in a creed he attributed to a vision of Mary and John the Evangelist, influenced later formulations. He combined wonder-working power with theological depth, representing the charismatic element in early Christianity.
