Optatus was Bishop of Milevis in North Africa and an important opponent of the Donatist schism. The Donatists claimed that sacraments administered by unworthy clergy were invalid and formed a rigorist, separatist church in North Africa after the Diocletian persecution. Optatus wrote "Against the Donatists" (six books) defending Catholic ecclesiology. He argued that the Church's holiness comes from Christ, not individual clergy, and that sacraments are valid regardless of the minister's personal worthiness—the sacraments work ex opere operato (by the work worked). Optatus emphasized the Church's unity, catholicity, and apostolic succession. His work influenced Augustine's later anti-Donatist writings. Optatus' moderate, reasoned approach contrasted with the Donatists' rigorism and provided theological foundation for Catholic sacramental theology. He represents the Church's struggle to maintain unity and orthodox sacramental theology.
