About Alexander of Bergamo

Alexander of Bergamo was a soldier and martyr, patron saint of Bergamo, Italy. Tradition identifies him as a member of the Theban Legion—Christian soldiers from Egypt commanded by Saint Maurice who were martyred for their faith. According to legend, after escaping the Legion's massacre at Agaunum (Switzerland), Alexander fled to northern Italy, preaching Christianity along the way. He was captured in Milan, imprisoned, and tortured for refusing to renounce Christianity and sacrifice to Roman gods. Finally, he was beheaded in Bergamo around 303 AD during Diocletian's persecution. His relics are enshrined in the Cathedral of Bergamo. While historical details are uncertain and legendary elements may embellish his story, Alexander has been venerated in Bergamo since ancient times, and his cult spread throughout Lombardy. He represents the soldier-martyr who chose Christ over military duty to pagan Rome.
