About Julian of Le Mans

Julian was the first Bishop of Le Mans and evangelizer of the Maine region in Gaul. According to tradition, Julian was sent from Rome by Saint Peter himself to evangelize Gaul, though this is likely legendary and he probably lived in the 3rd or 4th century. Julian performed many miracles, including raising the dead and healing the sick, which led to mass conversions in the region. He established the first Christian community in Le Mans and built churches and oratories throughout the diocese. Tradition says he was helped in his missionary work by Saints Thuribius and Pavacius. Julian is patron of innkeepers because legend says he was once refused lodging and had to spend the night in the open air, leading him to establish hospitality for travelers. Le Mans Cathedral (Cathédrale St-Julien) is dedicated to him, and his cult spread throughout western France. He represents the early evangelization of Gaul and the establishment of diocesan structures.
