Isaac of Stella was an English Cistercian abbot and mystical theologian. Born in England, Isaac studied in France before becoming a Cistercian monk. He became abbot of Stella (l'Étoile, "the Star") in Poitou around 1147 and later founded a daughter house on the Île de Ré. Isaac was a profound spiritual writer, composing sermons and theological treatises that combine mystical contemplation with philosophical rigor. His writings explore the soul's relationship to God, the nature of the Church as the Bride of Christ and Mystical Body, Marian theology, and the spiritual life's progressive stages. Isaac emphasized the intellectual nature of contemplation and the soul's capacity for divine knowledge, integrating Platonic philosophy with Christian mysticism. Though his works were sometimes mistakenly attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux or other Cistercians, modern scholarship recognizes Isaac as a distinct and important voice in 12th-century Cistercian spirituality. His deep theological insights influenced later medieval mystics.
