About Anton Martin Slomšek

Anton Martin Slomšek was a Slovenian bishop, educator, writer, and defender of Slovenian language and culture during Austrian rule. From a farming family, Slomšek was ordained priest in 1824 and served as parish priest and educator. He established schools, wrote textbooks and catechisms in Slovenian (revolutionary when German dominated education and liturgy), published children's books, and promoted literacy among common people. Slomšek founded the Hermagoras Society to promote Slovenian literature and culture. In 1846, he became Bishop of Lavant (later Maribor), continuing his educational work. He established the theological seminary, supported Slovenian language in liturgy and education, and defended Slovenian cultural identity when it was threatened by Germanization. Slomšek wrote poetry, textbooks, and spiritual works in Slovenian, raising the language's prestige. He worked tirelessly for his people's spiritual, educational, and cultural welfare. He died in 1862. Pope John Paul II beatified him in Maribor on September 19, 1999. He represents faith intertwined with cultural preservation, education, and social development.
