About José Sánchez del Río

José Sánchez del Río was a Mexican Catholic born in Sahuayo, Michoacán, on March 28, 1913. During the Cristero conflict he joined the resistance to religious persecution. Captured while still a teenager, he refused to renounce his faith and was killed in Sahuayo on February 10, 1928.

He was beatified on November 20, 2005, and canonized by Pope Francis on October 16, 2016. He is honored as a martyr, with a feast on February 10.
