About Denis

Saint Denis was the first bishop of Paris and one of the most venerated early Christian martyrs in Gaul (modern-day France). According to tradition, he was sent as a missionary to convert the Gauls to Christianity. He courageously preached the Gospel despite hostility from pagan authorities.

Denis was arrested and subjected to brutal torture, including being beheaded. Legend holds that after his execution, he picked up his own head and walked several miles while preaching repentance—a miraculous act symbolizing his unwavering faith and divine grace. This made him a cephalophore (a “head-carrier”) saint.

Saint Denis is honored as the patron saint of Paris and is seen as a symbol of steadfast faith, missionary zeal, and martyrdom.
