About Erasmus

Saint Erasmus of Formia, commonly known as Saint Elmo, was an early Christian bishop and martyr celebrated for his endurance of intense suffering for his faith. As bishop—possibly of Formia or Antioch—he continued preaching Christianity despite the violent persecutions ordered by Roman emperors.

Tradition holds that Erasmus endured horrific tortures, including being beaten, scourged, and even disemboweled, but miraculously survived multiple torments until his final martyrdom. His endurance under such extreme duress made him a revered figure in Christian devotion.

He became one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers—saints especially invoked during times of need—and is regarded as the patron saint of sailors, often associated with the phenomenon known as “St. Elmo’s fire,” seen as a sign of his protection during storms at sea.
