Francis of Assisi, one of Christianity's most beloved saints, revolutionized religious life through radical poverty, joy, and love for all creation. Born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone to a wealthy cloth merchant in Assisi, Francis enjoyed a carefree youth as a popular, worldly young man who dreamed of knightly glory.

After participating in war and enduring imprisonment, Francis experienced a profound conversion around 1205. While praying in the ruined chapel of San Damiano, he heard Christ say, "Francis, repair my church." Taking this literally, he sold his father's cloth to repair churches, leading to a dramatic public break with his father where Francis stripped naked, renouncing his inheritance and embracing "Lady Poverty" as his bride.

Francis lived as a hermit, begging, repairing churches, and caring for lepers—those he had previously feared most. In 1208, hearing the Gospel command to preach and own nothing, Francis began his ministry. His joy, simplicity, and authenticity attracted followers, and the Franciscan movement was born.

In 1209, Francis and his companions walked to Rome, where Pope Innocent III, despite reservations, approved their simple rule of poverty and preaching. The Friars Minor (Little Brothers) grew rapidly, spreading throughout Europe. Unlike monks who stayed in monasteries, Franciscans wandered preaching, owning nothing, living among the poor.

Francis's spirituality emphasized joy, radical poverty, humility, and seeing God in all creation. His "Canticle of the Sun" praises God through "Brother Sun," "Sister Moon," "Brother Wind," and even "Sister Death." He preached to animals, made peace between warring cities, and tried to convert the Sultan during the Fifth Crusade (earning the Sultan's respect though not conversion).

In 1224, while praying on Mount La Verna, Francis received the stigmata—wounds matching Christ's crucifixion—making him the first recorded stigmatic. His health declining, Francis died in 1226 at age 44, singing Psalm 142. He was canonized in 1228.

Francis transformed Christianity by recovering the Gospel's radical simplicity and joy. His three orders (friars, nuns, and lay tertiaries) continue worldwide, and he was declared patron saint of ecology in 1979.
