About Adauctus

Adauctus is commemorated with Felix among the martyrs of Rome. The current Italian bishops' martyrology entry places both names at the cemetery of Commodilla on the Via Ostiensis and remembers them on August 30. This paired identification is secure as a church commemoration; the date itself does not prove the day of either man's death. The entry gives no birth, family, or account of Adauctus's earlier life.

A later Passion tells a memorable story about his name. An unknown onlooker, it says, saw Felix led to execution, professed Christianity, and died beside him. Christians then called him Adauctus, or “added.” The *Catholic Encyclopedia* judges these Acts a legendary enlargement of an earlier inscription and identifies other errors in their cast of characters. The scene may explain later devotion, but it cannot be chosen as a documented event in Adauctus's life.

Older evidence belongs to the shared grave and its remembrance. An ecumenical reference reports that Pope Damasus arranged an inscription honoring Felix and Adauctus at Commodilla, part of which was recovered in modern excavation. The reference also identifies a later fresco of the two with Mary. An inscription and an image attest devotion to the pair across time; neither names a reliable sequence of Adauctus's individual actions.

The Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology describes its recent conservation of images of Felix and Adauctus in the catacomb's small basilica. It documents a tangible Roman place of remembrance, visible long after the men themselves. The art is valuable evidence for the cult and its setting, but is not a likeness taken from life. It cannot settle whether Adauctus was a given name or a title attached to an otherwise unnamed companion.

The historical *Catholic Encyclopedia* also notes ancient martyrologies and a church over graves associated with the pair. This makes their common veneration older than the dramatic Acts. It does not make the Acts' particular prefect, collapsed idols, or precise year of persecution reliable. Those scenes and a specific death year are omitted here. Adauctus remains significant through Rome's early and persistent memory of two martyrs honored together, even though the individual behind his name is largely unknown.
