Alexander of Comana

About Alexander of Comana
The Comana story appears in Gregory of Nyssa’s Life of Gregory Thaumaturgus. Gregory describes a delegation seeking a bishop for Comana and recounts that one participant mockingly suggested Alexander the charcoal-burner. This passage establishes that the anecdote circulated in Gregory’s account; by itself, it does not say Alexander was actually selected. The Orthodox Church in America’s later hagiographic account identifies him as the bishop chosen and preserves him as a martyr. The OCA account tells of Alexander’s public confession of faith and execution, but does not provide a stable chronology: its opening places the story under Decius, while its conclusion associates his death with Diocletian. The disagreement counsels against assigning a death year. The tradition’s central remembered features are his association with Comana, his humble charcoal-burning occupation, and his episcopal and martyr identity; these remain attributed to the church account rather than independently verified details.
