Amalberga of Maubeuge

About Amalberga of Maubeuge
Amalberga of Maubeuge is remembered as a seventh-century woman who entered religious life after marriage and motherhood. The New Catholic Encyclopedia distinguishes her from the eighth-century Amalberga associated with Temse and Ghent, and from the later abbess of Susteren. It warns that legend has embellished the first two lives and made their stories difficult to disentangle.
The medieval life of Amalberga the widow portrays her caring for the people of her inherited household rather than allowing them to go hungry. It names Witger as her husband and describes both spouses turning to religious life. Amalberga receives a sacred veil from Aubert of Cambrai. These details belong to a later devotional narrative, not a contemporary household record.
Historian Léon van der Essen compared that life with the biography of Reineldis. He identified extensive borrowing and argued that the account was composed at Lobbes near the end of the eleventh century. His dating is a scholarly conclusion about the text, several centuries removed from the period in which Amalberga is traditionally placed.
Van der Essen also questioned the expanded genealogy. The life names four daughters alongside a son, but his comparison shows names added to an earlier account. He rejected its inclusion of Pharaildis and Ermelindis and found no proof for a proposed second marriage that might reconcile the conflicting stories. The full family tree therefore cannot be treated as established history.
The life closes with illness, prayer and a funeral at Maubeuge, followed by the body’s removal to Lobbes. It praises her as a mother and supporter of the poor. The narrative records remembrance of charitable care and religious dedication, while leaving much of the woman’s actual chronology inaccessible.
The Catholic Church in Norway’s received notice commemorates her on 10 July and distinguishes her from the other Amalberga who shares that date.
