About Ampelus

Ampelus, sometimes written Ampelius, appears beside Caius in an older Roman Martyrology entry for November 20. The notice calls them martyrs at Messina in Sicily. It does not say where Ampelus was born, how he lived, or how and when he died. His identity in this page is tied to that particular paired entry, rather than to every person bearing a similar name in Christian calendars. The old commemoration is evidence that the names were transmitted together, but a calendar line cannot be enlarged into a complete personal biography.

The thinness of the record is recognized in *A Book of Saints*. Its Ampelus and Gaius entry says nothing is known about them as individuals. A death during the Diocletian persecution is presented as a presumption, not a sourced date or a description of a known trial. The reference also marks the pair as deleted from the 2004 Roman Martyrology. That change does not erase their appearance in older sources, but it means the November 20 line should not be displayed as a verified current Roman Catholic observance. Neither the old notice nor its later reassessment establishes a personal sequence for Ampelus.

The historical assessment is not simply a choice between accepting every late claim and dismissing the names altogether. Scholar Ada Campione's study of Sicilian entries in the *Martyrologium Hieronymianum* includes Ampelius and Gaius among figures whose historicity she argues can be recovered. The available university abstract summarizes that conclusion but gives no detailed person-level evidence to evaluate here. It strengthens the reason to preserve the old paired name while leaving the precise circumstances unfilled. A separate *Acta Sanctorum* comparison also mentions the Messina pair and distinguishes them from a similar name in another April entry.
