Aphrodisius of Africa

About Aphrodisius of Africa
The Roman Martyrology commemorates Peter and Aphrodisius together on March 14, placing them among martyrs in Africa during the Vandal persecution. A Catholic Church in Norway notice preserves the paired commemoration, dates it to the middle of the fifth century, and says that otherwise little is known about them. These notices provide no individual life story or distinct episodes for Aphrodisius.Baring-Gould reports that Bollandist critics considered Aphrodisius a mistaken name, proposing Euphrosius instead, and regarded the Vandal-period setting as a conjecture. This is an older criticism reported by Baring-Gould, not a settled identification. The record therefore preserves the name under which Aphrodisius is commemorated while making the uncertainty explicit; it does not conflate him with the separate Aphrodisius of Béziers.
