About Archippus
The New Testament preserves two brief notices. Philemon addresses Archippus alongside Philemon, Apphia, and the church meeting in a house, calling him a fellow soldier without defining an office or family relationship. Colossians asks the community to see that Archippus completes a ministry received in the Lord, but does not specify its nature. The USCCB notes competing interpretations; neither letter establishes that Archippus was Philemon and Apphia’s son or a bishop. Later Orthodox accounts call him an apostle and martyr, but those titles belong to church tradition, not independently established first-century biography.
