Portrait of Audax

About Audax

Audax appears in a short shared martyr account in the Roman Martyrology. It places the account at Thora, on Lake Velino, and names Anatolia and Audax together. The notice describes Anatolia as a consecrated virgin who healed people and says that a miracle attributed to her converted Audax to Christianity. This is the account preserved by the martyrology; it does not provide independent evidence for Audax’s earlier life. The notice then says Audax was imprisoned and sentenced to death. It does not give a date, a trial account, or details that distinguish his death from the group’s received martyr tradition. This biography therefore remains with that brief notice rather than filling the gaps with invented episodes.
