Aureus of Mainz

About Aureus of Mainz
Aureus is remembered as an early bishop and martyr of Mainz. His place in the city’s Christian tradition is clearer than the details of his life. A diocesan review of Hans Werner Nopper’s research places him in the fifth century, while emphasizing the difficulty of separating reliable information about the early bishops from later expansions of their stories. The review does not supply a securely dated personal biography.
The surviving traditions give competing accounts of his death. Some place it during an attack on Mainz and associate him with Justina, described as his sister. Others speak of flight into Thuringia and a companion named Justinus. The Catholic Church in Norway’s account sets these versions beside several proposed years and warns that the ecclesiastical sources are strongly marked by legend. Their disagreements do not support choosing one exact death date or location as settled history.
The later written record also needs to be distinguished from the period it describes. The scholarly repertory Geschichtsquellen dates Sigehard’s account of Aureus and Justina to 1297. It identifies earlier hagiography behind the work and notes that much of it concerns a fictitious early history of Mainz. Its descriptions of medieval veneration and miracles are evidence for the development of the cult, rather than an eyewitness record of the bishop’s life. The repertory also states that no complete edition of this account exists.
Current local devotion can be documented more directly. The Catholic parish in Büdesheim identifies its church as dedicated to Aureus and Justina. Its account records a church mentioned there in 1184, a surviving Romanesque tower and later rebuilding. That record shows how their names remain part of a living community’s place of worship. It does not establish the ancient bishop’s birth site, burial site or manner of death.
The Catholic Church in Norway’s record gives 16 June as the commemoration of Aureus and Justina in Mainz. The date belongs to their remembrance; it is not used here to manufacture a historical death date.
