Bertha of Bingen

About Bertha of Bingen
Bertha of Bingen is remembered with her son Rupert in the Christian tradition of the Rhineland. The received account says that she moved to Bingen after her husband’s death and arranged Rupert’s Christian education.
Mother and son later established places of hospitality for poor and vulnerable people on their property near Rupertsberg. Bertha remained there after Rupert died and was eventually buried beside him.
Their chronology is uncertain: the church biography presents both an eighth-century dating and a later alternative. In the twelfth century Hildegard of Bingen promoted their veneration and built her Rupertsberg monastery beside their chapel.
