About Birillus

Catanian tradition remembers Birillus, also called Beryllus, as its first bishop and attributes his appointment to Peter. The Bollandist commentary traces the notice to an eighth-century Life of Leo and fuller details to a tenth-century Menologion, with later name confusion. The archdiocese says a Christian community is demonstrable only from the third century; Peter’s appointment remains traditional.
